55 Grain FMJBT XM193

Is this 5.56×45 ammunition by Federal good for an AR-15? Absolutely – in fact, it is one of the most popular solutions for range training with the great American rifle on the market.

This cartridge is manufactured to the same specs as the U.S. Armed Forces’ basic M193 ammunition. (The X only means it was produced for the civilian market and not the military.) The 55 grain FMJBT bullet contains no steel and is not magnetic. Its solid lead core is encapsulated by a gilding metal jacket to enhance functionality in a semi-automatic firearm, and its boat tail helps the bullet retain its velocity so it can keep a flatter trajectory, retain more energy downrange, and avoid becoming deflected by crosswinds.

An FMJBT is not appropriate for hunting because it does not expand. There are more suitable bullets for home defense, but since this is basically the same ball ammo that the Army would use in combat it could easily help its owner survive a threat to their personal safety.

Federal’s American Eagle label stands for new brass cases, noncorrosive Boxer primers, and clean-burning propellant. That means this ammo doesn’t foul up a rifle with excessive residue, chambers and ignites to deliver consistent ballistic performance, and becomes reloadable once fired.
